Taking Santa Back to the Outback! Brief Synopsis

This is a musical designed to be performed by students at the early primary school level.

This musical for children is designed through story and song to evoke the spirit that is Christmas. A Christmas with a particularly Australian flavour.

The story of TAKING SANTA BACK TO THE OUTBACK focuses on two Australian kids who live in the town of Oodnadatta. Unable to understand why they have never seen Santa's sleigh in the sky, they write to Santa for an explanation. Santa replies, explaining that he used to fly over outback Australia but it was just too hot for the Reindeer.

The children decide upon a plan to help Santa out. They interview the bush animals and birds to decide which species would be the right choice to pull Santa's sleigh for him over Australia. They talk to Koalas, Kangaroos, Wombats, Possums, Platypus, Emus, Snakes and Lizards and finally they decide that it is the Kangaroos who would be the perfect choice, although they are all a bit concerned about 'the flying thing!'

They write back to Santa with their solution. Santa is very excited about their idea and he reassures them that the flying will be fine. He explains that technically Reindeer cannot fly either but at Christmas a very special event takes place. The Kangaroos like the Reindeer will be able to 'fly on the magic of Christmas.'

Santa agrees to meet them with the Kangaroos in Darwin on Christmas Eve.

Arriving in Darwin, the Reindeer are delighted with the prospect of time out and they plan to swim, lie in the sun and make the most of room service.

The Kangaroos are also very excited except for the youngest, Rooey, who is not at all convinced that he will be able to fly. Santa explains to him that all you have to do is find the spirit of Christmas and when you truly feel it inside your heart, you will be able to soar. Rooey tries and tries until finally he is able to fly. At last the Kangaroos can return Santa to the skies over the Outback.

The story combines elements of imagination and fantasy with the values of friendship, togetherness and trust. It points up the rewards of doing something for others, problem solving and pursuing a goal. It examines self worth and faith. Most of all TAKING SANTA BACK TO THE OUTBACK is about the fun of discovering the magic that is Christmas!
